Proper Education Improves Job and Business Prospects

What is proper education, though, and why are so many people doing courses and still not getting jobs?

Learning is a journey that takes time. It is a well established fact that everyone has two types of memory: short term and long term memory.

A shorter course may well often only impacts short term memory. It is perfectly feasible for someone to attend a class; learn something, be tested on it, and pass the assessment; all very quickly. If it is too quick though; that learning only goes into short term memory; and a few weeks after studying, the student is left with no benefit from their study at all.

A Permanent Impact Shows Little Immediate Advantage; but Pays Off in the Long Term.

When learning impacts upon long term memory it not only stays with the person; but it grows. If, for example, someone has long term learning of how plants or animals can be identified, they will increase the number of things they can identify over time. This learning has provided a foundation, unlocking the possibility for expanding their learning incrementally over time. If however the original course was too short; the learning will fade fast and there will be no foundation for growth.

You Can’t Fast Track Education
In today’s fast paced world, there is pressure from everywhere to fast track everything; and education hasn’t avoided that situation. Consider how long certificates and diplomas took in the 1970’s; and how short some are today. In the 1970’s fewer people did longer courses; and their long term memory was impacted more permanently. Today a lot more people do a lot more (shorter) courses, and despite having a more “qualified” youth population –we have more unemployed youth.

Short Term Learning may be Cheaper; but it leads nowhere!

Long Term Learning requires students to engage with the same skills and information repeatedly, over a long period of time; definitely months and preferably years. This is costly but the human mind is not like a fast car that can be sped up by using the accelerator.

At ACS Distance Education; our courses do take longer; and always have; but in doing so, we are impacting the long term learning of our students and as a result, having a permanent impact upon their long term potential.
