Classifying Citrus

Citrus fruits are some of the most popular plants to grow, as home garden fruits and in commercial orchards. Citrus gives us oranges and lemons, and a whole range of other flavours. Most citrus are best grown in sub tropical or tropical climates, but there are plenty of options to grow in temperate locations too. Few will tolerate extreme cold though.

The variety of different flavours you can find is more than what most people realize.

Identification of different species can get a bit confusing though. Citrus is one of those groups of plants that has seen so much interbreeding between species, that the distinction between different species has become blurred.

Horticulture Needs More Graduates

I saw a professional journal article this week about a lack of graduates in horticulture. Not enough people are studying, and many of the well established universities and colleges are not teaching what is needed to those who are studying.

We are working hard at staying up with the times and developing new ways of teaching students; but alas; many colleges seem to still be bogged down with old ways, which are rapidly becoming redundant.
