We published a new ebook on Succulents yesterday

Many different plant families contain some plants that are succulents. Some families are dominated by succulent plants, while others may be dominated by non-succulents, but still include some plants that are either strongly succulent or weakly succulent.

We review most of the main families in the book and present most of the commonly cultivated genera in a well illustrated encyclopedic directory.

Consider just one of the families in this extract:

Crassulaceae
34 genera and up to 1,500 species.

  • Most genera display a degree of leaf succulence. Leaves are opposite of alternate.
  • Flowers consist of a corolla made up of 4 – 5 free segments.
  • The crassulacean acid metabolism is a common feature of the Crassulaceae.

Genera that include succulents are: Adromischus, Aeonium, Afrovivella, Aichryson, Cotyledon, Crassula, Cremnophila, Dudleya, Echeveria, Graptopetalum, Graptosedum, Greenovia, Hylotelephium, Hypagophytum, Kalanchoe, Lenophyllum, Meterostachys, Monanthes, Orostachys, Pachyphytum, Phedimus, Pistorinia, Prometheum, Rhodiola, Rosularia, Sedella, Sedum, Sempervivum, Sinocrassula, Thompsonella, Tylecodon, Umbilicus and Villadia
